Modern telephone as an educational and management tool among students: an observational study

Streszczenie
Wstęp. Smartfon (ang. smartphone) zadebiutował w 1992 roku. Łączy funkcje telefonu z przenośnym komputerem. Obecnie jest powszechnie stosowany i służy również do edukacji. Coraz częściej stanowi narzędzie edukacyjne.
Cel pracy. Charakterystyka zastosowań telefonu jako narzędzia edukacyjno-zarządczego na wybranej grupie studentów.
Materiał i metody. 299 studentów Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi: 44,1% ratownictwa medycznego (n = 132), 34,8% pielęgniarstwa (n = 104) i 21,1% zdrowia publicznego (n = 63). W badaniu uczestniczyło 71,9% (n = 215) kobiet. Zastosowano anonimową ankietę internetową Google.
Wyniki. 51,5% (n = 154) respondentów posiada smartfona jako telefon, 4% (n = 12) nie wie, jaki ma typ telefonu. 68,6% (n = 205) studentów posiada dostęp do internetu w telefonie. W badanej grupie prawie co trzeci student przeglądał materiały edukacyjne ze swojej uczelni w smartfonie, a co piąty korzystał z materiałów edukacyjnych z innej uczelni.
Wnioski. Uczelnia wyższa powinna zintensyfikować tworzenie narzędzi edukacyjnych i zarządzających edukacją studentów w oparciu o smartfon.
Summary
Introduction. Smartphone has debuted in 1992. It combines functions of a regular phone with those of a portable computer. Nowadays it is spread worldwide and it is starting to serve as an educational tool more and more each day.
Aim. Characteristics of smartphone usage as an educational and management tool amongst chosen group of students in Poland.
Material and methods. 299 students of Medical University in Lodz (44.1% emergency medical services, 34.8% nursing and 21.1% public health). 71.9% (n = 215) respondents were females. An anonymous Google survey was used.
Results. 51.5% (n = 154) students owe smartphones, 4% (n = 12) do not know which type of a telephone they possess. 68.6% (n = 205) have internet access in their phone. In the study group almost every third student used their phone to browse through educational materials of their University and every fifth used educational materials of different Universities.
Conclusions. Universities should produce more educational and management tools for smartphones.



Introduction
Smartphone has debuted in 1992. It combines functions of a regular phone with those of a portable computer. Nowadays it is spread worldwide and it is starting to serve as an educational tool more and more each day. Mobile Advertising Forecasts published by Zenith in 2018 showed that 66% population worldwide have an smartphone and 62% in Poland (1). Smartphone is not only a phone. App use and specially educational App are popular. Research performed worldwide showed educational role of smartphones. The research to check how common for students of medical faculties as well as nurses and beginning physicians is to use apps for help with studying were performed in different countries (2-5). However it is the first of its kind in Poland and we want to show if it is worth it to encourage developers to create those applications in our country.
Aim
We conducted the research to check how common for students of medical faculties is to use apps for help with studying. Characteristics of smartphone usage as an educational and management tool among chosen group of students in Poland is our primary aim.
Material and methods
Research was conducted in 2018 at the Medical University in Lodz, Poland (at the Health Science Faculty) among fields of studies: nursing, emergency medical services and public health. Data was collected via an anonymous online questionary concerning:
– What do students use their phone to?
– How much time do they spend on their phone?
– What is their opinion of medical applications?
– What kinds of didactic materials do they use?
– How much would they be willing to pay for a medical app?
Data was analyzed using Excel programme (an academic licence). 299 students took part in the research (44.1% emergency medical services, 34.8% nursing and 21.1% public health). 71.9% of respondents were women (n = 215).
